Sterling Silver Montana Agate & Garnet Pendant~JSSMAG14. Montana Agates formed as a result of volcanic eruptions and massive lava flow about 60 million years ago in the Yellowstone Park area. These are no ordinary agates; they are a one-of-a-kind rock, that are located only along the banks and beds of the Yellowstone River and its tributaries (The filming locations for the movie “A River runs Through it”). The Yellowstone River is the most prominent river flowing through Southeast Montana and along its shore you can rockhound a variety of rocks such as jasper, petrified wood and quartz but the most notable find is the Montana Agate. Montana Agate is formed from chalcedony, one of the many types of quartz. Chalcedony has a waxy luster and can be semitransparent or translucent. It is found in a wide range of colors, but the colors most common are white to gray, grayish-blue or a shade of pale brown ranging to almost black. Montana Agate gets its red color from iron oxide and the black color from manganese oxide. The fern-like effects of trees, shrubs and mountain scenes come from tiny canals inside the stones that let mineral laden water seep into the stone ages ago, creating these marvelous pictures so sought after by collectors and admirers. The Montana Agate colors are uniquely displayed with moss-like, fern-like or tree-like inclusions. The most frequent colors seen in Montana Agates are, in descending order, gray, white, brown, salmon, red, orange, black and yellow. The color caused by various embedded minerals consists of iron oxides and hydroxides giving yellow, brown and red colors; copper oxide gives red, green colors; manganese oxide gives bluish and brown. It encourages perseverance and patience, and promotes a peaceful inner and outer environment. It has a strong connection to the plant kingdom and deepens our own connection to the Earth and our place in the Universe. It is a mineral of bonding, bringing others closer and activating the energies of cooperation in group efforts.
